A kitchen can be a fun room to decorate when you decide to do home improvement. You probably spend a lot of time in the kitchen so why not give it a little of your personality? Adding color to your walls, counter-tops, floor and cabinets can make your kitchen an infinitely more enjoyable place to work. You can use a color scheme in your kitchen to really define the look and feel of your space, so go ahead and make it your own.

Modern Vibe – There is something a little wonderful about working in a kitchen that you love. You can create energy in your kitchen by bringing in colors like cobalt blue or a bright, sunny yellow. You may choose to saturate your appliances with color, or you may choose to leave them neutral, so that you can easily change your color scheme around them.

Warm and Wonderful – If you enjoy nothing more than entertaining in your kitchen, why not set it aglow with warm earth tones. This color palette creates an inviting and comfortable atmosphere throughout your space that is sure to make your guests feel right at home.

Laid Back – You can create a wonderful casual feel in your kitchen so that anyone who enters will enjoy the space. Green is a soothing color, and it will work well to create balance in your kitchen. It is also an organic color, so it works well when you combine it with an environment filled with food. Add some yellow accents and your kitchen will simply be delicious.

Industrial Lines – If you like a clean and clear space to work in, then you may prefer a more industrial vibe for your kitchen space. Stainless steel and white make a kitchen that exudes cleanliness, and it provides a great backdrop for any accessories or focal point that you want to display.

Romantic Respite – If you would much rather cook your romantic dinner at home than go out to a restaurant, then this is the look for you. Use warm wood tones and dark colors to give your kitchen a rich and luxurious feel. As you light your candles to enjoy your romantic dinner the dark tones of the room will highlight the romance of the candle’s glow.

As you are designing your perfect kitchen there are a few things that you want to keep in mind.

Continuity – Even when you are using color to create a strong mood in your kitchen, you will want to connect it to the rest of your home’s decor to keep it feeling cohesive. One of the easiest ways to do this is to pull a color from an adjoining room and include it in your kitchen.

Coordinate – While counter-tops and flooring are pretty permanent fixtures in your home, you can use wall color to link your room to the rest of the house and to make it feel balanced. For example, if you have a granite counter-top, you can choose a color from the granite to use as your wall color, and select another color from the counter-top to use for your cabinets. Even though you will have several colors splashed around the room, they will feel cohesive.

Balance – Use color to balance the look of your room. You can use your accent color sparingly throughout the room to create balance in your space.

Ways To Save On Electric Bill Using Off Grid System – Solar And Wind Energy For The Home | Home Improvement

Whether you are motivated by saving money, or because you care more about our ecological system than the average Joe, chances are you have thought about ways to save on electric bill using off grid system to power your home. There are ways and you can use them on your home improvement.

In some areas of the country, the solution is obvious – solar power. With the right combination of solar panels, charge controllers, and batteries, there is no reason why you could not run a normal family home off of this alone. These are known as stand-alone systems, and they are the ideal solution if you are in a more remote area.

What if you are not in our nation’s region that experiences abundant sunshine? Other options are still available to you. Wind energy is also jumps to mind when people think of alternative power. Wind also tends to be more available nationwide than sunshine.

While putting up a wind turbine on a small city lot may not be an ideal solution, there are many people living in suburban or semi-rural areas for whom this becomes an ideal and very viable solution.

It is fair to say that micro hydro electricity does not ready pop into the minds of many people. However, this is also quite an efficient source of renewable energy. Should the water supply available to you be plentiful, this can be a wonderful way to provide for lots of reliable energy for years to come. The energy produced this way is also very consistent, something which the other two alternatives are still working on.

Going the route of alternative energy and off the grid power not only frees you from the bounds of your local power company, but also drastically reduces your carbon footprint. Be sure to check out your area, consider your needs, and know your climate well before jumping into any of these. A little background research can save you more energy than you will ever know.

Cleaning Tips When Moving In To Your New Home | Home Improvement Tips

2

Posted by Priyo | Posted in home improvement tips | Posted on 22-05-2010

Tags: , ,

When we make a home improvement, one of the most annoying things about moving house is the cleaning ‘“ and removing stubborn stains and marks is one of the hardest things to do when prepping your house for a move. Its always important, when using these tips to spot test and ensure that you won’t be doing more damage than good. You should also always take your cleaning items with you ‘“ a box of your most commonly used items or a checklist can save you time and effort in the long run.
Some of the most common stains and marks can be removed with ease ‘“ with every day household items.

Scuffs and marks on woodwork can be removed with a pencil eraser ‘“ these marks, from shoes, wheels, or rubber bumping against things are hard to remove any other way, but come off with ease with a rubber.
Toothpaste isn’t just great for cleaning teeth ‘“ you can use it to remove stubborn ink, crayon, or scuff stains from any surface ‘“ be careful to test it on wallpaper first in an inconspicuous place. You’ll have to remove most of these stains from walls before painting as they can show through several layers of paint.

Toothpaste is also good for removing crayon from radiators, or glass ‘“ just rub lightly with a non abrasive cloth, or for tough stains, leave to sit for up to one hour before scrubbing gently.

You can remove unwanted paint from most woodwork by carefully scouring with a brass scourer ‘“ not too hard though, or you’ll scratch the other paintwork.
Scum stains, dried toothpaste and lime scale come off with liberal application of an oxy based paste ‘“ you can get any ‘oxy’ based cleaner (one that fizzes and heats up the water slightly) in most supermarkets.
You can remove moldy or damp smells just about anywhere with bicarbonate of soda. Simply apply to the smelly area (or leave a tub open in a cupboard or fridge) and the smell should be vastly diminished or gone within 24 hours. The same goes for activated charcoal, or a few drops of vanilla on a cloth. Baking soda is good for a whole month, so can be used continually, not just for cleaning for a move.

If you’re washing textured walls, use a nylon sock to do so ‘“ it means you won’t leave fluff in your wake ‘“ and always wash walls from the bottom up to avoid streaking, applying any cleaning solution you’re using (once tested to ensure paint, or wallpaper fastness) in small patches whilst you’re cleaning.
You can remove wax from carpets, floors or curtains simply by using an absorbent cloth and a hot iron ‘“ the wax should stick to the absorbent cloth and peel away easily.

Finally, don’t mix cleaning products ‘“ most contain either ammonia or bleach and when combined the fumes are deadly. Care should be taken when cleaning any are that has been spot treated with a different solution than you are mopping with, because not only are some mixes deadly, but others can react with one another and cause spotting, or ugly marks.

They are available in different sizes and shapes

They could be either huge or small. Bigger fountains are suitable for huge gardens while smaller ones may be installed in smaller parks. Backyard fountains are often wall fountains or pond fountains. Wall fountains are attached to walls and don’t take up much space. Hence they are popular for scaled-down gardens. Pond fountains are big and are wired and programmed to execute various patterns of water sprays. You will find several resources used in producing back garden fountains. Some in the popular ones contain fiberglass, wood, copper, concrete and porcelain. Concrete and ceramic are considered to become the best. Carving with sculptures and then giving a finish with sandstone add towards the beauty of the fountain. Selecting the correct type of the normal water fountain for your lawn is an critical choice.

Buying High Quality Replacement Double Glazed Windows | Home Improvement

One thing that we should consider when doing home improvement. In changing windows, we need to consider this following things:

1. Your window should be firmly secured to your brickwork. Avoid timber packers and expanding foam at all costs as this just does not last and is easy for a burglar to rip out.

2. Look for steel reinforcements within any PVC frame. It should be throughout the entire frame with the exception of the corners. This is essential as this protects your glazing unit from blowing and getting condensation between the glass.

3. Only buy virgin grade PVC with calcium organic stabalizers. This quality is the only grade of PVC that will still be legal in 2015 and will be guaranteed to keep their colour for 20 years.

4. According to Which magazine, the optimum air gap between a double glazed unit is 20mm, this gives you the best sound reduction and thermal efficiency. When buying a replacement double glazed unit ask for proof that you are getting an A rated window.

5. To get a 20mm air gap you need a very solid window to support this weight hence the need for steel reinforcement and they also need very strong locks and hinges.

6. The number one security tip is always insist that your glazed unit is fitted from the inside of your home

7. All quality replacement double glazing have a double draft proofing strip to make them storm proof.

8. It is now illegal to fit upstairs windows that can not be cleaned from the inside and open in such a way you can use them as a fire escape. Warning illegal windows can stop a house sale in its tracks.

9. Ask to see proof of a BBA certificate number. The BBA test is an independent European recognised method of testing the entire system.

10. Insist on a lifetime guarantee for the sealed glazing unit to ensure you are covered should your glazing ever develop condensation between the double glazing.

Gardening on your new home | Home Improvement Tips

Here is some home improvement tips about gardening. The advantages of a small garden greenhouse are immeasurable as they are the best way to ensure a supply of fresh plants at very manageable costs throughout the year. To further cut the construction costs, the option of homemade greenhouses allows for the use of materials readily found in your home for the same supply of fresh flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables.

After deciding to build a garden greenhouse, you should collect all salvaged materials that will help you actualize your plan. Greenhouses vary from small sized that accommodate a few plants to medium sized and larger ones in which you will grow all kinds of plants. Small greenhouses are especially handy when the space available is small too but which should not deter you from putting up one. Pots, bowls and used bottles are the simplest form of greenhouses. Idle buildings in your compound can also be turned into greenhouses with a few extra touch ups to create the ideal environment for the plants you intend to grow.

The same environmental control considerations apply even when making a homemade greenhouse. As with other greenhouses, the focus is on providing the most ideal environment for the plants you want to grow. As a result, the greenhouses should have the appropriate ventilation, circulation, heating and cooling systems, as well as be in a position to receive maximum sunlight exposure. Water supply should also be adequate. These greenhouses largely depend on solar energy for heating as they are often much smaller than commercial greenhouses for which heating systems are installed.

Garden greenhouse designs give you the opportunity to explore your creativity. Besides, you will be in a position to include all your personal ideas and incorporate your gardening needs as you make your own greenhouse. The greenhouses can either be free-standing or lean-to greenhouses that could be attached to existing structures, the main house or the garage. Even if homemade, your greenhouse ought to be attractive enough to match the overall look of your garden and house.
For a small garden greenhouse, there might not be space for benches and extra room for storage of gardening tools. The larger designs may have this space which makes your gardening very convenient as everything you need, will always be within reach in your greenhouse. The key is to maximize on the available space by growing as many plants within it as possible. You will therefore need to figure out how to position your plants to achieve maximum use of space.

Of course it’s easy to find many diverse ideas on the internet that will provide you with information on how to best utilize whatever available space you have to the different designs and sizes applicable. The biggest advantage of greenhouses is that there is no limitation of what season it is and so you can grow all kinds of plants at whatever time of year you choose. Homemade greenhouses provide an overall cost effective way of having low construction costs in most cases as well as a continual supply of your choice of plants in home improvement. You will therefore not have to deal with rising costs of grocery since you will have an abundant supply all year round.

Are you looking for household tools such as lock and keys, electrical supply or cleaning products? You definitely have to go to a home  depot. The usual concept for these stores revolves around access to everything that is needed under one roof. Large varieties of products are available in a home depot. The usual products here are appliances such as refrigerators and TV, building supplies, doors, flooring, heating and cooling devices plumbing storage and organization tools and windows. They also sell hardware supplies which include hand tools, paint, lawn and garden products; plumbing supplies, house wares and a whole lot more. A home depot usually has special departments that include products of a customer’s interest such as fishing tools and supplies, hunting supplies, plant and nursery products, farm and ranch supplies including animal food and pet food and supplies.

These departments sometimes also have swimming pool chemicals, home brewing supplies and canning supplies. The stores can often cater for renovations and home improvements through supplying everything you need for home repair and maintenance tools such as hardware tools, electrical supplies and structural materials. The biggest customers of a home improvement depot are the Do-It-Yourself buyers. DIY is like building or repairing something, that is, without the help of professionals or experts. DIY has been a great hit with home depot in the past years but has been declining because people now tend to look for someone who can do that for them instead.

Home depot are very common in the United States. In fact, a chain of home depots have been around for a while now. There are four leading suppliers to home depot in the US. These are, Do It Best Corp. which is located at Fort Wayne, Indiana; True Value Company from Chicago Illinois. And the last one is Orgill which is a traditional wholesale organization. Furthermore, there are still a lot of home depots that are still thriving to survive the industry. These numbers however, shows a decline compared to the past. Though it is tough to compete with large chain stores, there are still home depots that are still opening all the time. Moreover, chain stores have continued their expansion. Which drove the growth in market sales.

According to research, sales have been excellent from the previous years up to the present. Though the sales growth had been slowed down because of the global financial crisis, it is not considered as a decline. Companies expect to be back on track soon because the recession is almost over and done with. The industry has big competitors, wherein each and every one of them has big shares of the market. Moreover, it is considered more of a movement than a retail sector. To avoid decline in sales, companies have taken and considered some ways to generate sales. Some stores nowadays allow contractors to rent equipments, tools and delivery trucks for home improvement. The steps prove to be effective as there had been an increase in sales in the industry.

Home Improvement Stores Shift to Appeal to the Fairer Sex

More than one in three women in the UK do most home improvement jobs around the home because they do not trust a man to do the job right. These are the results of a survey carried out by Focus Do it All even going to home improvement stores.

The survey of over 700 women provides evidence that fixing up the home is no longer strictly the domain of the man of the household. Women that took part in the survey commented that they had to step up to the plate and complete a job that had been started by a husband or partner. Amongst a range of comments the time taken to do a job was one of the other main reasons that women had taken over the reigns. They claimed that men took half a day to complete a simple job.

Women are more than capable of doing the job and are increasingly using power tools and taking the lead on projects. There have been a range of articles in the press recently that discuss the more active role that women have been taking with regards to home improvement. There have been a range of interesting trends discussed and experts have suggested that there will be a change in the way that the home improvement stores market products as more and more women get turned on to home improvement.

So what kind of changes can we expect from home improvement stores in order to appeal more to the fairer sex? I’m not expecting to see a range of 13 oz. Pink Hammers coming to B and Q stores any time soon but these tools are available from a range of specialist on line retailers already. Just Google “pink hammer” and you will see lots of sites have pink tools designed specifically for women. With a range of websites offering advice home improvement is accessible to everyone irrespective of sex.

On a more serious note retailers like Focus have started to take notice of the increasing female market as an important growing segment and will have to appeal to this segment in order to ensure continuing success. This is all backed up by the claim in the survey that three out of four women claimed to make all of the DIY project decisions.
